Involving them would mean they'd want to whisk her away somewhere. Or worse, her

brother, Andre, would want to stay at his place 24-7 to keep an eye on her too.

The thought of being in the same house as Madison and not being allowed to touch her

made his stomach clench. Now that he finally knew the fantasy of having her was nothing

compared to the reality, he felt like a randy teenager again.

After making sure all her appliances in the kitchen were off, he walked back to the living

room. Just as he collapsed onto her pale blue love seat, a scream ripped through the air.

“Rafe!”

His heart jumped in his throat, and he bolted upright. As he sprinted for her bedroom, the

sound of breaking glass sent a shiver snaking down his spine.

When he reached the bedroom door, Madison nearly bowled him over as she ran into him,

trying to escape.

He grabbed her by the shoulders and yanked her out of the entryway. “What's going on?”

“Man with a knife. Out the window. Down the fire escape.” She pointed with a shaky

finger.

Cautiously he entered her bedroom. Shattered glass littered the floor beneath the

windowsill. He hurried toward the window and peered out. From his position, he could see a

man wearing a black ski mask descending the metal stairs. “Police! Freeze!” he shouted, but the

man didn't break stride.

After a visual scan of the neighboring street and Madison's back parking lot, Rafe realized

there weren't any cars. Which meant the man was parked nearby or had an accomplice waiting

somewhere close.

He fired his gun. With all the metal bars in the way, it was an impossible shot, but he

wanted the guy's attention. The ricochet of the bullet made a loud pinging sound, and it shocked

the guy enough to pause and look up.

Rafe couldn't make out much except the height and build of the assailant. His first instinct

was to chase after him but he couldn't leave Madison alone. That might be what the men after her

wanted.

“Rafe?” Madison's terrified voice brought him back to the present.
